Back Lot Gallery was started as a family venture between Keith & Suzy Hankins, and their daughter, Joyce McCown in the spring of 2015. Seeing the struggles their recently graduated daughter faced as an emerging artist, the Hankins' decided to take action. Together the trio formed a gallery model tailored to providing opportunities and learning experiences for new artists of all ages. This model is centered around solo artist shows - one artist at a time showcases his/her work. This opportunity gives the artist experience in creating a body of work, currating their work, talking about their work and selling their work - all of which builds confidence in who they are as artists.
Once a Back Lot Gallery artist, always a Back Lot Gallery artist! What this means is the gallery is the artist’s home gallery available for references and referrals for other show opportunities, fellowships or residencies. Sine the gallery has opened artists of all ages and backgrounds have had the opportunity to showcase their talents and share with those who visit the gallery all their talents - not just one style or subject matter.
Meet the Owners:
Keith & Suzy Hankins started Back Lot Gallery in 2015 in the building behind their boutique hotel, Ant Street Inn. Originally from Texas, the couple moved to Brenham in 2012 after "living abroad" in Missouri for six years. They love TCU (their Alma Mater), visiting Galveston's beaches, & sharing some good ole fashion Southern Hospitality.
In 2016 the couple opened a five room bed and breakfast, Main Street House, basing the decor of the home and guest rooms around artwork purchased from Back Lot Gallery artists. They continue to fill Main Street House B&B with artwork from the artists who show at the gallery.
Meet the BLG Creative Director:
Joyce McCown is a mixed media artist, and the Gallery’s new Creative Director. As a new resident of Brenham, she plans on sharing her love for creativity by combining aspects of the gallery and her own art studio, MoonShadow Press.
Joyce graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis in 2014. She loves new art supplies, YA Fantasy Fiction, visiting museums, & Blue Bell Ice Cream.
Since Joyce was the inspiration behind the gallery, she has had several solo shows over the years at the gallery, including the first show in March of 2015. Joyce’s experiences as an emerging artist continues to be a guide for the gallery’s scheduling, selection process and experience.
